SullivanArc's Garden Takes Shape

On April 24 approximately 50 volunteers from Kohl's Distribution Center in Wurtsboro, NY showed up to Volunteer for SullivanArc.

The fifty volunteers, along with their spouses and families, erected a nearly one-acre large fence on the site of SullivanArc's newly formed Community Garden in Woodbourne. They also helped build the first beds for the garden and planted an apple tree donated by Kohl's. The garden will feature organic vegetables and herbs and will be maintained by SullivanArc's consumers. The children in SullivanArc's programs will participate in a special program designed to teach them about growing a garden and its benefits.

A generous donation from Key Bank supplied the materials to build the fence. SullivanArc was also awarded a 2010 Sullivan Renaissance Environmental Initiatives Grant, which will help initiate the building of the garden.

Nearly 200 people were on hand to join in the festivities, including founder Ruth Bennett's daughter, Deborah Berlove. Ruth Bennett founded SullivanArc in 1949 and what started out as a tiny school for mentally retarded children has grown to today's SullivanArc which supplies support to 800 individuals with developmental disabilities.

Not only were several local dignitaries, politicians, supporters and staff in attendance, but approximately 30 consumers of SullivanArc's services joined in as well.

Amy Susso, sister of the late Derrick Finn, made an emotional speech about her brother who passed away in 2004 and has been memorialized with the Derrick Finn Memorial Award, given to a consumer each year. This year's winner was Lara Biella.

Twelve unique flower gardens were on view throughout the day on Saturday, July 11 during the Sullivan County Bicentennial Garden Tour Sponsored by SullivanArc and Sullivan Renaissance.

There was something for everyone on this wide ranging tour ranging from a delightful English cottage garden by Marian Fries of Livingston Manor to a tropical paradise at Stuart Salenger’s Philwold in Forestburg where visitors were greeted with colorful leis and where tortoises, toucans and orchids were on display for all to enjoy. The tour was divided into two routes, a southern and a northern, but all guests were allowed to visit as many gardens as they could handle in one day.

Carolyn Summers of Neversink, opened up her Flying Trillium Arboretum and handed out maps to her guests to help negotiate her 300 acres of trees, secret gardens, waterfalls and bent wood structures. Dave Forshay of Willowemoc let guests stroll through his gardens which he lovingly maintains in memory of his wife, Terry.

Guests rambled throughout Forestburgh resident Mark Veder’s grounds and were invited to preview his stone and glass greenhouse powered by solar and geo-thermal energy that is currently under construction.

The final stop at the tour was the Woodland Wilding Memorial Gardens at Catskill Regional Medical Center where all guests were invited to a wine and cheese reception.

Any Sullivan County gardeners interested in including their garden in next year’s tour can contact Kathleen Capazzoli of Sullivan Renaissance at 845-292-2452 or Susan Diamond of SullivanArc at 845-796-1350 ext 1003.
